Only if you go lowest common denominator
I run gentoo linux. It pulls down the source files and automatically compiles them. The advantage is that I can set the make.conf to use all the optimizations possible on my P4 cpu (mmx, sse2, etc). This gives me the fastest possible executing program. Of course, it won't run on an AMD, PIII, PII, PI, 486, or 386. And no, I don't want to be stuck with i386 binaries that don't use my CPU's features.

And as for drivers running on kernel 2.6 just like it ran on kernel 2.4, have you tried using a Win2K PPPOE driver on XP? There are some things that are not possible unless you're psychic, and write your driver to be compatable with the kernel of am OS that'll be released two years from now.

The problem is venders have to supply 10 or so drivers.  DonnieBoy | 05/06/05
