The problem is venders have to supply 10 or so drivers.
If they want to cover all of the different versions of the kernel and distributions that are still in wide use. If we want hardware to work out of the box with Linux, even for people running an older kernel, we need a common binary interface so it will be simple to include a driver. Untill then, hardware manufactures will just throw up their hands and not support Linux. Everytime I buy a new laptop, it is the same old struggle.
