Another thing, we need binary compatibility accross distributions/kernels
We need to have a driver model so that someone can create a driver that will work on all kernel version (within reason) and all distributions. This starts with the code generated by the compiler. Of course we will have new driver models that make things faster/better, but the old drivers should run un-touched. For me it is a real pain dealing with drivers for I/O cards
