Good plan on MS's part
This will probably help soften their image with the general computing public. Certainly, MS will look a bit nicer than the jack-booted RIAA does as of late. It won't do anything to quell ABMers, but as we can see in this very Talkback, anything MS does only infuriates ABMers more.

Still, MS is handing out an olive branch to people who either unwittingly bought an illegal copy of Windows, or wittingly bought it but have no problem turning against their supplier once they have theirs. Plus, MS gets to track down the distributors, who I believe are the REAL problems in intellectual product piracy.

Someone making a copy of their Windows disc and giving it away to a friend is unethical and illegal, but that's really insignificant to those who make money hand over fist selling dozens or hundereds of unauthorized copies. I'm no MS shill, but I do have to say, "Good move, Microsoft."
