Hardware prices have come down because the price of components has come down. Do software engineers cost less than they did 20 years ago?

Yes, they do cost less. Quite a lot less than in the 90's.

Besides, I think 85% profit margins leave some wiggle room in the pricing. There's a reason why MS has all that money in the bank...if it wasn't a monopoly you can bet that Windows would cost $30 (and that would *still* be a decent profit).
