I disagree...
You're thinking about this all wrong.

Firstly, SCO is not a respectful company. Respectful companies wage legitimate law suites, and don't attempt to pull in revenue by selling software that is not their own. Asian countries selling pirated copies of commercial software are more respectable than SCO.

Linux is only a threat to those who don't know it. If you are a ******** Microsoft admin/developer, with no additional skills, then Linux is very scary. If you are not, then Linux is no big threat. So the OS will be free and MS will miss out on those revenues. So what? Everything else will be business as usual.

The IT industry is not threatened by Linux -- it is complemented by Linux. Linux and other open source software will free up extra IT budget dollars to hire more US workers. In a time when IT budgets are drastically shrinking, Microsoft significantly increases the cost of their products (via the Software Assurance Program). With the rising cost of software, how will CIO's make their budget stretch? I know! Take a huge risk. Layoff all of their American workers and outsource to India!... Not a good route, but what other option do they have? Answer: Reduce your software licensing costs by using Linux/OSS and retain your high-quality US workers.

Linux is the IT industry's friend, not the enemy.

Here are those who are threatened by Linux:
1) Microsoft employees
2) Microsoft shareholders
3) IT workers who have MS only skillsets
4) A small percentage of other commercial software companies
