No, they're not....
StarOffice and OpenOffice.org are not the same products. Sun did add proprietary value to the OpenOffice.org codebase to justify the 50 buck overprice. For the last few years StarOffice offered an access replacement and OpenOffice.org did not. Now, OpenOffice.org offers a database product distinct from the StarOffice database: OpenOffice.org uses a Java database as the underlying code, whereas OpenOffice uses as I recall desktop Ingres. I expect that the new cross-licensing agreements with Microsoft will further diverge the Free, Open, and Proprietary codebases.
