Valid points....
ExEm2SS - you are correct in everything you say. I should have chosen my responses more carefully.

I will say this - I began developing my database career using Access 2.0 and thought it was the most wonderful piece of software ever created. Now, 8 years later, if I could snap my fingers and make most of my current and former customers that I had developed strictly Access apps for convert - it would be done.

Don't misunderstand my point. Access has a track record and of course it CAN be used to build some fairly complex applications. I could probably make your stomach do flips for an hour if I showed you some of the code i've come up with to 'piece' together solutions haphazardly because customers didn't want to spend the time or the money upfront for real software. Of course, we all know they pay for it in the end with maintenance, etc.

And - in my years of using Access, i have yet to implement a system that uses access and ANY backend (SQL Server, etc.) that can truly scale. Pass through queries are great for many things - like populating combo boxes and using static data in other ways. However, have you ever looked at how many locks Access puts on an entire TABLE, even when programatically opening a simple cursor? Often times when using ODBC (and i've even messed with the Desktop Engine for improved scalability and data access) - Access will lock and entire table, and will ALWAYS lock a page. It's just dirty - and *NOT* meant to scale. TenFold is.

Using Access has some RAD happy advantages - and it can be a great tool. But in the end, comparing Access and TenFold in terms of *Enterprise* level performace is like comparing a 1979 Ford Pinto (clean one owner) to the 2005 Corvette C6....... there isn't really a comparison unless you enjoy being a grease monkey every weekend :-p
