There is certainly room for new development tools.

I have worked previously with a tool that was very heavily orientated towards using metadata in a DBMS to create the application and business rules and I have to say that the level of productivity and reliability was way above anything that is possible in the object-orientated world. So what Walker is proposed is by no means new. The product I am talking about was first launched in the early eighties and had some very large corporations among its customers. What is astounding is that these methods have been ignored for so long.

However all the hype about it being like Excel is fairly nauseating and highly misleading.

Furthermore the article states that the application definitions are stored in a "relational database". Why do they then deliver MySQL with TenFold and why is it compatible with Oracle, SQL Server etc. There are good arguments for dismissing these products claims to be relational.

In my view best to wait for a product that follows some of these approaches but is actually based on a proper implementation of the relational model. Probably 70-80% of TenFold will be papering over the cracks in SQL DBMSs.
