The $hill plays a bad Shell game, LOL... Google THIS.
Cute post. I knew you were dead wrong on
the matter of Win shells, I just needed to
check it out. BTW, you are toasted by your own
citation.

Like Joe, I tried what was LITERALLY a
handful of shells that were available around
the time of Win98, six or seven operative
shells at most. I tried these at home, as M$
offered no structural support for shell
alternatives beyond the "shell=" entry, and
NONE of the alternatives were stable enough
to use at the office! I liked some, dismissed
others, then abandoned them altogether with
W2K. Unlike the GUIs available for Unix and
Linux, most Win shells were unstable, made
Windows unstable (wait, W98 was already
unstable as Hell), or they were functionally
weak.

Inasmuch as there were only about a
half-dozen major shells a few years ago, your
"thousands of shells" assertion was absurd
on its face.

Expecting what I found (heh), I went to your link
of SHELL EXTENSION CITY, a site the likes of
which I've seen many times (tin Omen, etc.).

http://shellcity.net/cgi-bin/DB_Search/db_sear
ch.cgi?setup_file=topicpage.setup.cgi&submit
_search=yes&topic=A

Clicking on "shells" in the sidebar produced
the page and message: "Your search turned
up 94 hits"

Well, 94 Hits, NOT very many, and THAT
number includes MANY shell extensions to
Explorer, shell switchers, and links to shell
sites which, from my experience, offer the
same shells for the most part. That is, you
won't find too many more at another site than
the number found at SHELL EXTENSION
CITY.

So out of 94 hits, I count about 47 legitimate
shell replacements, MOST OF THEM == NEW
(3 years or less), including those for games,
betas, etc. Subtracting that bunch leaves us
with the handful that existed 4-5 years ago,
including LiteStep, Blackbox, BEOS,
EVOLUTION, EVWM, GEOSHELL, and
MACVISION. Let's be generous, then, and
round that total to 50 shells available for
Win32, MANY of which are variants of the
originals.

50 shells. That's FOUR, count'em, FOUR
ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE fewer than the
"thousands" you claimed.

We are not surprised. We expect Micro$hills to
distort, push FUD, and generally play fast and
loose with the truth.

WinShells, and the NON-shells listed at
SHELL EXTENSION CITY that deserve special
mention, are below:
