How many
ALTERNATIVE GUI 'shells' have you used on ms windows?
MS windows started and REMAINS largely the supporting
infrastructure for their desktop GUI.

Ofcourse, the GUI desktop should be a shell that runs and
uses the services of a kernel. That is the basic tenet of X11
running on Unix and subsequently on Linux. As a matter of
fact X11 allowed developpers to use or put together their
own toolkit libs to create their OWN touch and feel. There
are MANY toolkit libraries under X11. Finally, the window
manager creates the higher-level of iteraction with the GUI:
moving windows, resizing, applying ops to them, etc.

X11 was and still is a decent architecture: the graphical
engine is tailored to the underlying H/W but the
customization takes place at different layers. And guess
what: the GUI is just another app inheriting exactly the
SAME rights of the account who is running it. There is NO
cryptic or undocumented interrelationship with the kernel
or other dependencies and a failing Xapp or even the
Xserver itself does not bring the system down.

And MOST IMPORTANDLY the X11 apps DO NOT HAVE TO
RUN at the SAME HOST as the graphical rendering engine (X
server) and you can SEAMLESSLY and SMOOTHLY operate a
desktop from ANY MACHINE on the Internet. Of course MS
DOESNOT want users to have the 'run from anywhere my
stuff' capability since it needs people to pay cash to use a
SINGLE PC and distributed computing would allow many
users to SHARE a larger back-end machine. But FAT PCs
bring money in and we cannot let people do something
useful over the Internet unless they are charged an arm and
a leg.

But I guess you also charge an arm and a leg to 'show the
poor people' how to animate their presentations using MS
ppt as the local MS 'expert'. Obviously you have a good set
up going there for you. You show people how to use MS
tools and people thing that you are an expert with deep ...
technical knowledge.

I guess the 'easy come easy go' applies to everyone and the
cow would not let you milk it forever... wink

Where are the 1000s of graphical shells for windows? Do
you mean all the various portings of X11 to ms windows?
