Perens will fail ...
And 'User Linux' if it ever takes off will be just another distro. The whole architecture of Linux is geared to diversity and competing elements. In the end it is the consumer, corporate or individual, who makes the decision regarding which desktop, etc. Any distribution which attempts to limit these choices will simply narrow their market appeal accordingly. The User Linux concept will go nowhere. If it were that easy, Perens could simply make the decision and forge ahead. But as soon as he leaves his own world, it no longer works, and that is the crux of the problem. There are a handful of major distros today and the major commercial app vendors write to all of them. That situation is unlikely to change soon. The differences are minor and are shrinking as Linux standards emerge. The problem will resolve itself long before this thing gets off the ground.
