But... your conclusion that linux is a long way away from everyday desktop user is a bit over the top. I think you have to differentiate between home users and buisiness users.

For buisiness user linux is ready for the desktop. Most users in that category do little else the word processing, browsing and emailing. The software currently available for those tasks are good and very useable. I do not think that the user in this catehory would have any trouble switching from windows to Linux.

The home user is a different thing indeed. I agree with you where installing software in concerned but I have a reservation. The installing of software is a problem when you download the software from the internet. I have Suse wich comes with 7 cd's full of software and dependencies are not a problem because they are taken care of by the installation routine. Most major software is represented on these cd's so installing them is as easy as under windows.

Your conclusion should, in my opinion, be that Linux is not ready for the home user used to installing software from the internet. I've seen some research that only a very samll percentage of everyday users actualy fall under that category.
