no linux standards
Perens idea will falter just as LSB and United Linux. One of my peeves with linux is the fact that there are no real standards. Choise is one thing, but there are simply too many ways in linux that it has split the user groups into too many camps. Commerical application programers simply can not support them all.

Even with all the initiatives and newer distros that have addressed easy installation, not one single distros has fixed the number one, largest problem with linux - program installing. RPM and DEB just don't cut it. Apt-get? Please how cryptic can you get? Haven't seen a distro yet that could resolve dependancies 100% of the time.

Program installs need to be a single file with all dependancies included or at least, an ftp link to a place to resolve it. All this should be transparent to the user with no interactions.

Linux is a LONG WAY from everyday desktop users.
