- It's still needed
-
While I agree a 64-bit version of Windows Media Player is not needed, and will not benefit from being a native 64-bit app, the native codecs are needed. Many programs will benefit from going native 64-bit, but the developers no longer create their own codecs, relying on the codecs that Microsoft supplies instead of doubling up efforts or creating similar codecs that are not cross-compatable. This follows the feasablility of the 64-bit XP's usefullness.
It reaaly looks as if you will need to dual-boot your system between 32- and 64-bit Windows for the next year until Longhorn is released, or until there are enough drivers and applications to make 64-bit windows a feasable solution. Since XP-64 is not on the shelves, you also have to buy a new copy of XP and send it back to M$ to get your 64-bit version, as you can only get it as a trade-in or as an OEM pre-installed option. Right now I don't see it as being worth the hassle. I look again in 6 months when all the bugs are found and the native 64-bit applications start rolling out.
Until then, it's really a bragging toy and a crap shoot that will cause much aggravation. I don't need 64-bit IE, but since it's there, and there's no alternatives yet, I will need 64-bit virus protection, 64-bit spyware protection, 64-bit backup software, and a 64-bit email client, just to start.
BTW - has anyone seen non-beta 64-bit apps out there for the Windows platform yet?
