1/10 Kindle 2 - not good

sjcoombs@... - 02/25/09

The biggest repository of free e-books on the net is Gutenberg: but Amazon don't want you reading free e-books - they want you to pay for their e-books so no support for plain text or pdf on Kindle 2. Bit of a waste of time and money when I can read them for nothing on my PDA.

1/10 alas, amazon turns evil

if we are all forced to pay for content, then what will happen to libraries? what will happen to inheriting books, lending books, giving people your old books, investing in books? Will this usher in a new dark ages where only the rich and privileged - the 'right sort of people', will have access to new books? Much of the bulk of scholarly content these days is in text/HTML/pdf/XML format - the kindle simply must support these. Maybe amazon should give/rent/sell 'library' kindles to libraries and schools so that people can still have access to free libraries in the traditional way. Remember - no libraries, no civilization!
