5/10 Mimio

RRRRyan - 12/10/08

The capture bar is useful and virtual ink is neat, even though it does lag significantly. Don't be fooled by the capture kit though. For all the R&D they put into producing neat devices the eraser and markers will not do what you would think they would. If you are hoping to get this an interactive whiteboard solution you will have to live with just the stylus. The markers and eraser do not work in interactive mode despite the obvious absurdity of it. So to erase, as of the end of 2008, you must click the stylus on the toolbar and select the eraser tool and then use the goofy little stylus and suffer the lag of it before your interactive drawings will go away. Owning the mimio eraser won't help that one bit. It will buzz and report its position to the capture bar all the while the software will ignore it. Humbug.

Here's the deal - this is great if you are an educator. The capture feature is completely separate from the interactive feature - one uses the stylus as a mouse, a projector, and your files/powerpoints/web sites, while the other uses white board markers in the pen sleeves with no projection. One is for capturing notes or diagrams drawn on your surface (does NOT have to be a white board) for printing or inserting in other applications, while the other is a presentation tool - much like any other smart technology. While using the capture feature, you use the provided eraser to remove images. While using the interactive feature, you use the eraser on the toolbar. They have now come out with a mimio pad, which can be used anywhere in the room (or up to 50 feet away) from the board to interact with the software. Great tool for the interactive classroom.
