1/10 Commending Illegal Behavior?

MC1171611 - 10/13/08

I must say, I didn't expect to see this kind of response from a legitimate, mainstream blog and review site like ZDNet. Pystar is openly breaking the OS X User license by installing it on non-Apple hardware. It's rather disappointing that this organization would "commend" Pystar's illegal activities.

7/10 Definitely not illegal, probably not infringement.

To the reviewer above, Psystar has a good case that the OS is sold without limitation on the box. It's only the EULA that limits the installation to Apple hardware, and that condition may very well be ruled unenforceable. Since they are (apparently) not modifying the OS at all, Apple has no other leg to stand on. I sincerely hope that software vendors won't be allowed to decide what brand of hardware I install legally purchased software on, especially without notifying me before the sale. That would be an awful precedent.

1/10 daengbo, you have a choice, don't buy it

If you don't want your software integrated with your hardware, go buy something else. There's plenty of choices out there. Do you have a PS3? a Wii? An XBox360? Are you equally miffed at them for the same integration? Should you be allowed to install one of these 3 OSs on your hardware of choice?

3/10 Not illegal, not much peace of mind either

I sincerely disagree with the fact that Psystar is doing anything illegal. Apple is the one party that is anti competitive. If people believe that what Psystar is doing, than jail breaking an iphone is illegal too. Apple seems to get away with it, MS would have been massacred if they did the same. No one in this world would argue that an Mac should only be used with let's say AOL as ISP only, because there is revenue sharing. Though we accept it (or some of us) when it comes to an Iphone. Apple behaviour regarding OS X is the same, it is sold separately and it is not up to Apple to tell how you are able to use it. Although I love to see OS X working on other machines, I am afraid that it will end up like the windows mess. It is simply worth to pay a bit more for a real working solution. But in the end it is the consumer who should decide and not the producer. On the other hand Apple should be able to guarantee the OS only on Apple hardware.

1/10 The fact they're using software from the OSX86 community is even illegal.

Every boot loader and EFI emulator is for private use only, not commercial use. Paired with the fact that Apple has, in plain English, that Mac OS X is to only be installed on Apple-branded hardware in their EULA, this makes for a double-whammy on Psystar. Unfortunately for the Open Source community that makes Hackintosh possible, there's no collective fund to hire a lawyer and join with Apple in shutting down Psystar. And the fact that ZDNet condones these activities makes it that much worse.

5/10 Mixed review

I bought this model several months ago. When the box arrived, I was underwhelmed. The packaging was generic. The box itself wasn't even Psystar labeled. The shipped it in the box for the case manufacturer. That was a bad sign but it's the machine that counts, right? Overall the machine works very well. Somethings do not work. Time Machine does not function- don't even try it. Also, although Psystar claims that updates are automatic, the actual OS updates must be downloaded directly from the apple site. Psystar doesn't deliver them to your machine. (ie: 10.5.x->10.5.x+1). No big deal right? well every time I did this the machine would break. The first time, I opened a ticket with Psystar and the told me how to fix it. It would have been nice to receive those instructions FIRST. but no. The next time, well the machine broke. Now sleep mode doesn't function. Psystar has not offered a fix, so I guess I'm screwed. Sleep mode isn't the end of the world though, overall the machine still works fine. I see the website is advertising Snow Leopard though, and that's another disappointment with the company. While they are selling new machines with Snow Leopard, old machines are *NOT* upgradable. Their official word is that they are testing upgrades, but that's been going on for over a month, and they're still 'testing' upgrades to the last point fix. So basically, no upgrade path here. I'm not saying its bad, since performance of the machine is quite good, but people need to be educated about what's in store for them post-purchase.

4/10 Quo systems are rock solid

Deltaluv - 10/13/09

@blix01 - wondering why you choose Psystar. I talked to Quo and Psystar and Quo seemed a lot more friendlier and open. I bought a lifeQ (quad processor) and it has been rock solid. The support has been great they even helped me out with connecting to DSL modem with ip forwarding to my Quo. Upgrades all work.
