EDRMS - what are the dangers?
I work in the Records Management Industry and I work towards full electronic records management with government BUT at the same time while I am encouraging people to capture documents I know that someone will need to assess those documents. Someone will need to make judgment calls on what is valuable and what is not according, of course to approved Retention and Disposal schedules. So who is going to sift through the database and decide what to shredder delete? What are we going to pay this person? I started as a sentencing clerk (paper records) we didn't get paid much but we were making decisions that sometimes might not have been what the boss's would really needed. Meaning we didn't have all the information about the issues surrounding the documents we were assessing. So should the decision maker be, say middle management level or higher? I cannot see that somehow and the task will get delegated to a lower level.

Also my mind looks to fantasy futuristic films where if the information isn't on the computer, it doesn't exist, could our reliance on electronic records eventually outway common sense. Also an equally awful thought is that electronic information, such as electronic medial records, could give the government the ability to make decisions according to the age of patients. I don't know.

There is so much good to yet be gained from keeping and sharing electronic records, eg: public access to records and connected government service delivery, that I keep any nagging doubts I have usually locked up but just occasionally I wonder where this will all lead, what will our world become?
