Lincoln/Bible: House Divided Also Works, But
Today's buzz was that, as I understand it, Win Mo 7 will be the
product for taking on iPhone OS 3 or 4 and Win Mo 6.5 will be the
product to take on Android.

I think that isn't really comparable to "multiple operating systems"
situation today with iPhone OS 3. It runs on all generations (yeah, two
years, big deal) and a user who is running 1 or 2 is doing so for their
own reasons. Because Apple's business plan calls for a symbiosis
between hardware and software, there will, one day, be an iPhone OS
release that will not be installable on the oldest phones. When that
happens, Apple will cut the old phones off rather than provide two
version of the os (though they may support, for a few years, security
fixes for the phones left behind.)

No, I look at today's WinMo news as indicating they will actively
engage the sectors with two variations of their mobile operating
system.

Seems to me that when Apple was introducing the SDK last year, they
made a point about the advantages to the developer for having only
operating system and hardware profile to test for. Now they have one
operating system and three generations, so maybe the "advantage" to
the degree it existed is gone.

Still sometime in 2010 there are going to be multiple hardware
profiles and two WinMo operating systems. Does that look developer
friendly? And take this, not as someone on Redmond's back, but as
someone who ponders the wisdom of fighting a war on two fronts
when it seems to me they have been having trouble these past few
years finding the front.
