Tell Me About It
I bought a portable DVD player right when they first came out, back in the late 90s. A Panasonic DVD-L50:

The thing cost me a THOUSAND BUCKS!

...and now, now they're selling 'em in freakin K-Mart for like a fifty bucks! *sigh*

Although it was a lot of fun showing it off back then, because back then the whole concept was just completely out of this world.

Oh I should also mention that the screen crapped out about four years after I had it. It still plays DVDs, but only via the output jacks. So essentially now all I have is a thousand dollar DVD player. *sigh*

...and don't even get me started on the $200 Rio MP3 player I bought back in 1998:

I think it was the first...or one of the first, with a whole 32 MEGABYTES of storage!

I remember using a lot of encoding tricks and specialized MP3 codecs to get the file sizes down far enough to store more songs on it. Standard codecs/software at the time were usually limited to like 128kbps to 192kbps, so if you wanted custom settings you needed specialized software and codecs. I believe I used something like 48 kbps and 22,050 Hz.

That one's major flaw...the battery cover flap would easily break, especially if you ever carried it around in your pocket and then you
had to use electrical tape to hold the stupid mess together.

I've got a little Creative MuVo with 256MB of storage now...much nicer...and *WAY* smaller, although even its getting outdated...but at least it only cost me like $30 bucks.
