Using IT to make a bigger impact on energy usage
Great blog post! My name is Jennifer Geisler and I am senior marketing manager at Cisco. I find interest in your quote from Forrester research that the top motivation for pursuing Green IT is to "reduce the energy-related costs of operating IT." I too have seen that research and while I believe that it properly captures IT's motivations, it does not show the whole picture. Our research shows that 58% of energy use in offices comes from Heating, Cooling and Ventilation and 25% comes from IT equipment.

The top motivation may be to reduce IT energy usage, but that is soon changing as the Energy Czar that Mckinsey wrote about starts to utilize IT and networking to control the energy usage of multiple facets of an organization. The network is really the backbone of controlling energy usage and can be extended, such as through our Energy Wise technology, to control the energy usage for HVAC and significantly reduce the 25% used for IT.
