Opening up for more code contributions
I think the dual license approach has worked well for MySQL. It's part of the "quid pro quo" approach that we have used in our business. But there's no doubt that MySQL could do a better job accepting code contributions. In the early days, the founders just didn't have the time to craft a perfect contributor agreement. We have one now, but we haven't always had the manpower to review and incorporate code contributions. (Sometimes we get contributions that require three or more iterations to get them right. It's not always easy to contibute to the kernel of a DBMS!)

Nonetheless, it's an area that the team is going to improve upon in 2009. We have approved some new resources to help in this area and I expect we'll get better at this in the months ahead. Look for some news on this in the new year.
