It seems that someone hasn't been paying attention for the past decade or so.

Linux outgrew its reliance on gifted amateurs about 15 years ago, say the founding of RedHat and SUSE.

That said they're still there and often produce the most interesting and forward looking work which are polished up by the more commerically oriented.

Nothing wrong with this either. In the FOSS world this is how things get done!
