Still in the knowledge part of the curve
I have been researching a lot of different cloud technologies and some of the things I have seen have started to give me some hope this tech might someday be ready for prime time.

The biggest reason data security is not a hot button issue is that adoption is still pretty low. Hackers target Windows because of their market share. The valuable data is entwined on Microsoft based solutions.
I kind of pity the poor CIO that becomes the first target of a cloud hacker. The recent Twitter incident reinforces that just because legitimate users and decision makers aren't talking about security, doesn't mean hackers aren't looking at the prospect of new illegal revenue sources.

I personally am looking for encrypted connections, encrypted storage, and the possibility that my company could control just how long a data item exists in the cloud independent of a vendor.

I have heard of a program called "Vanish" that seems to be a step in the right direction from my point of view.

Another large issue is off line availability. Especially for productivity. Even in major USA cities, ISP service outages occur. Arguments that tell me that my Internet connection should be treated like my electric service don't wash for me. If I had mission critic electric needs I would have electric source backups. Same is true for the cloud. However, if I can get a cheap but effective alternative plan, that keeps my company and philosophy in line with cloud adoption. Solutions that involve my company creating it's own IT shop kind of take away from the whole "cloud" feel.
