I too have noticed this increase in self inerest
I am a 15 year veteran of software engineering 30 years in engineering in other fields. I owe my value to two things. The help I have received from others and the research I did on my own.

I am often asked to "mentor", business speak for manage without the pay or authority, junior developers. I know what you are saying but there was a time that I was treated like a professional. I was trusted and I returned the trust and offered up loyalty to seal the deal.

Now I am micro-managed. I am treated like a piece of equipment and referred to as a resource.

Yes the bottom line is important but if they want it designed and implemented and want it done right they still have to come to me. I feel like this is the only leverage I have to survive in this often politically motivated culture today.

I am not going to train my offshore replacement and I can always go back to contract consulting (mercenary) to get the money my time is worth. But I haven't yet. I still hope that our leaders will start leading and grow some balls when facing the board of directors.

It is a fortunate thing that I hold professional ethics and fiduciary responsibility in high esteem or things in my group would reflect the treatment that has become acceptable under the guise corporate ethics. Does it surprise you that building teams in these kinds of environments is difficult.

First a team needs leadership. That leadership needs to lead by example. You have to feel that the company cares about the team or it is pointless to even try developing team work.

It is this corporate culture we have spawned that is at fault. When a company will offshore your job in a heartbeat if it saves a nickel irregardless of quality or human cost.

Self interest??? Hell yes, these days nobody else will have your interest at heart.

Oh, in case your wondering I never worked for Accidenture but I have cleaned up after them.
