What you're describing is good argument for SAAS (Software as a service)
Disclosure: As a Sage Business Partner in the US I am not independent with respect to my comments.

Great analysis and you touch on quite a few of my questions as well. I'm not sold on how well a relatively small VAR can do by trying to skate upstream and service X3 level clients. My gut feel is the same as what I think you're implying - not well.

I would like to point out one thing about your article which you didn't touch on.

The issues that you're describing seem to make a very compelling argument for the evolution of Software As A Service (SAAS).

If the market can get to a place where you remove the local installations of software and manage it centrally - you can start to remove the low level annoyances such as setting up workstations and performing minor configuration troubleshooting.

Granted you'll probable never eliminate the need for some local presence - but wouldn't a SAAS architecture go a long way to making these type of international implementations much easier to manage?
