Google sidewiki does a few things your everyday comment system doesn't
Which is important... Google is definitely becoming the giant gorilla (or squid or sasquatch) in the room, but there is no denying their innovation.

With Sidewiki they are adding 'context' to comments and the power of commentability to the user. Sites no longer have to implement their own commenting system and bother with the technology around that. This means greater transparency in the stream of consciousness of the netizen.

Also by allowing comments (or additional info form the user) to be directed to a specific line in a body of text you allow for more targeted commentability and thought and more directed information.

Google may no longer have the 'do no evil' attitude but their drive to use technology to elevate 'the conversation' is undeniable.
