Brilliance = Techie + Financial Managerial
I think one of the reasons Microsoft has been so succesful is that Bill Gates was adept (not necessarily the best) at both spectrums: the techie and the business side.

Witness General Motors under the "Smith" (bean counter) tenure: un-inspiring cars; and then under Stempel (product guy): better cars but didn't cut cost quickly enough... Also Apple under Gil D'Amelio (production guy) vs. Jobs (product guy) but in this last case, the products and Jobs force field are enough to lift the financial business side.
