Twitter is the Rich Man's business card
Hi Jennifer,

I think that Twitter has a very high potential of becoming a business card, but a lot of people are web-savvy, but are not rich enough to afford a web-enabled mobile device yet. Connecting asynchronously should also be an option for these folks...

What I do to leverage my social media presence and therefore augment my odds of connecting after a face to face connection is to stick my web identity info at the back of my cards. When you're heading to a conference, you can also include a URL with your presentation material, getting rid of the need for handouts. See the following pic:
