Actually, NASA's F-8 DFBW flew prior to the X-29. The F/A-18 also has DFBW and flew prior to the X-29. The X-29, which did have DFBW, was actually designed to evaluate forward swept wing technology. The DFBW was an enabler in terms of providing the control authority to keep the X-29 in the air.
