why do you keep talking about ubuntu
...as it was an easy distribution and do not try out linux mint? a far better integrated and just "out of the box functional" distro.
try it, and you'll see that your father in law doesn't want to go back. Ubuntu, for me still has a lot of rough edges, i've tried and had lots of details to resolve, which in mint never even appeared.
a long fruitful relation with him now, for over a year. and counting... even suitable for girlfriends! wink
