The "PC"
I'm posting this in response to all the post stemming from this thread. Why does it matter if the PC BIOS was cloned or where it was cloned when the original point is that IBM created it first. No matter how you argue it, IBM standarized the platform that has evolved into PC's today. Even if they had never built one themselves, the fact that they helped make them all the same and "compatible" enables them to claim they "created" the PC. They didn't invent them. They "created" them. No matter how bad you want to be right, and get your opinion in this blog, it's not going to change that fact. In the late 80's and early 90's you were better off owning a Apple then a PC that wasn't 100% IBM compatible. If IBM didn't create the standard for which all PC's are based... then why clone them? As for the brand recognition issue that IBM has, comes from their lack luster consumer products even before they sold it off to Lenovo. It doesn't matter how durable a product is if it doesn't appeal to the public. IBM has never been know for cutting edge styling and general good looks. Like a Dodge Power Wagon, its ugly, but it's tough as nails, and like the Power Wagon it only appeals to those who truely apreciate what it is. Want to further alienate your users? Send your entire consumer division to China and call it Lenovo. Why would anyone know who IBM is after that? Why would anyone care? IBM continues to build very good server and enterprise products. I myself decided on both Windows and i5 Series IBM servers for the data processing department I worked for. But for the clients, I wouldn't touch a Lenovo built IBM. As far as Mac being the same as a PC, I wouldn't be suprised if they were built in the same plant as IBM now that its all outsourced. And people still wonder why our economy is going down and China is getting rich?
