Geez - a lot of work - why?
1. Organize the data on the XP PC that she wants to keep - create a directory called XPData and using subdirectories, copy the music, photos, .pst file, etc.
2. Everyone knows new PCs come with crapware. Boot up the Vista PC and delete all that, then setup the Internet connection on the Vista PC and install any updates.
3. You will also have brought a switch and a couple of CAT5 cables with you. Plug both PCs in the switch and copy the XPData directory from the XP PC to the Vista PC. On the Vista PC, scan the XPData directory for malware.
4. Setup the Vista PC and apps the way she likes and give her some pointers on the new OS.
5. Creating a VM was overkill. Not sure why it is needed. Vista is not hard to learn, and the best way is to just use it. Cut the XP apron strings.
6. Securely clean the XP HDD of all data and tell her to bring it to a reclamation center.

End of Job.

Maybe a 4 or 5 hour job, not days...
