Chrome OS is a key building block
This is why I think the concept of Chrome OS is so powerful.

Sure you will be able to use your web apps offline, like desktop apps (thanks to HTML5/Gears), but the core functionality of the apps will live in the cloud. And because the client OS will be so lightweight, you will be able to access your apps & data from any device within arms length (smartphone, notebook, photo-frame, eReader, television, refrigerator, carputer, ...).

VERY exciting!
