Wide Screen Not Always Useful
Wide screens look really cool, but the second photo with the portrait format screens may be more useful. I have two 22" widescreens, and I turned one vertical - I can put a copy of IE on the top, and the style examination window of IE 8 at the bottom - the other I left horizontal. While Excel and SQL Server is pretty cool on a wide landscape (the ribbon in Office 2007 expands to show more options immediately available), many applications don't gain much from more horizontal space.

Resizing the windows will drive you crazy. That's why the second photo (several small screens) is so much better than the third (four landscapes). You can drag a window to one of the verticals and make it full screen with a simple shortcut, and you have several windows at decent size quickly. On the landscape screens, you'll be dragging window edges forever, and if you run Word, for instance, in what would normally be near full screen (not landscape), the remaining horizontal space isn't worth much - except for Vista's gadgets, I suppose.
