I am glad i am not the only one who thinks degrees are worthless.
If i had stayed in college i would have ended up at another company, probably still doing tech support or maybe junior admin. I spent two years in college, realized my mistake and got certified in what i wanted to do instead.

My mother threw a fit, but i now make more money than her and twice as much as my sister who has two degrees. Obviously its important to go into your field of study to make the most out of your degree, but hands on experience will get your foot in the door with a paying job well before a degree.

I would almost say.. get certified in whatever you wish to work in, get out into the field and then once you reach a comfortable level, use your companies contineing education funds to pay for college. Course that only if you feel like advancement will depend on that peice of paper.

I was put in charge of a companies network at age 21 and made IT Manager at 25. Obviously you have to be good at what you do, but certifications will help you get there.

In regards to your networking sentiments, i completely agree. Get out there, meet people, dress nice for an interview, be prepared to answer off the wall questions and please keep your resumes as short and readable as possible.

Hiring folks is not the most enjoyable process, but being someone who has hired before, i look at a few things:

1. Personality, will they fit with the team?
2. Knowledge, do they have the basics down?
3. Experience, do they have enough or any and is it applicable?
4. Distance, How far away do they live, are they willing to travel daily? how about travel to remote locations?
5. Customer service skills, how do they handle situations?
