What you are really seeing...
What you are really seeing is a general trend about information in general. We still have papyrus scrolls from Eygpt 3000 years ago but most future people will not know much about us. When Wikipedia finally dies what is going to happen to the information in it? Since it is editable it's worth is not that great anyway.
Some people believe that online storage will persist for centuries. The problem what format will be used in 200 years? What happens when you forget to update the current data format? What happens when a major information repository just disappears?

Losing Encarta might be bad but who is going to pay money to keep the information around? If someone was willing to pay money for the information, Encarta would still be around. So it is kind of a paradox.
