Typical Microsoft
Microsoft has a long history of establishing standards, then abandoning them or reversing direction.

The whole Office 2007 / Vista transition is proof that Microsoft DOES NOT CARE about its customer base, and in fact, Vista has been a huge boon to the Mac / Linux communities: If I have to practically learn a new operating system, then I might as well EVALUATE other options. If Vista was enough like XP with minor differences, just as XP was similar to 2000 with minor differences, then there would not be a question of loyalty.

Microsoft has gotten so big and bloated that they assume the universe and their customer base bend to their will.

Over the last few years, here is what we've seen from Microsoft:

- Software that doesn't install properly unless you visit a blog site for support (NO KB ARTICLES)

- Usability and functionality changes that frustrate and hamper the established user base

- Removal of functionality as a convenience for the developers, rather than fixing a bug

I find it unacceptable that tens of thousands if not millions of websites need to be updated for FORWARD compatibility with a new product. Isn't it the manufacturer's responsibility to maintain BACKWARD compatibility with existing convention?

CONVENTION by definition IS STANDARD. If web developers are USING A FEATURE BY CONVENTION, then it IS STANDARD.
