Good sites, bad sites...
It is more down to how poorly the sites are coded.

Standards mode = good

Compatibility mode = works with sites from lazy devs...

We have had a good long time to get our websites in order. It isn't as if yesterday's release was a surprise, we've had the beta and release candidates available for a while now.

It is more down to poor client checking than anything else. Instead of checking for specific versions of browsers, they just check to see if it is IE and break the site. They just need to add a check to see which version of IE is being used!

On a well built and maintained site, it should only take a few seconds to change the code.

In fact, the site I've just finished works fine with IE 8 without any special style changes, it just takes the code for "non-EI7 and non-IE6" browsers and works.

The sooner IE 6 and IE 7 disappear, the better. With IE 8, I don't need to waste time going back and adding hacks for IE, so that it will look like it does on every other browser...

Yes, if you are being very clever and using everything that JavaScript and CSS offers, there are small differences between the rendering, but on general sites, the "other" browsers are compatible enough with each other, now that IE8 has joined that club, it should make life a lot easier.

We should be berating poorly written sites, as opposed to berating Microsoft for actually doing something right for a change!
