Don't need the desktop software.
You can sync your BB with Gmail, which can sync to thunderbird, and does your calendaring too with either Thunderbird or Google. That's how I do it. Synced Thunderbird to Gmail, then synced GMail to my BB, all over the web.

The desktop software only allows you to sync to outlook and outlook only, so is not really useful for many. (Yes, you sync to OutLook then export so Thunderbird can import, etc).

I haven't tried it yet, but you can sync Thunderbird with Sheduleworld and use Fanumboi to then sync your blackberry to Sheduleworld. Course, it also works with Outlook as well.
