Nowadays, a university degree or doctorate doesn?t guarantee you a job at the end of your course, whereas ?learning as you work? is becoming more and more popular.

As far as I understand it, University places have gone up considerably since the 80s (source: old man reminiscing), at which point apprenticeships, i.e. learning as you work, was far more commonplace. Tied to the increase in University places was a decrease in apprenticeships.

So I guess this is more of a 30 year cycle.
