Oliver makes a great point about the need to get
users to adopt collaborative E2 tools as a primary
part of their workflow. I think, however, the
solution lies more with tool improvement than in
changing user behaviors. Email isn't going
anywhere. Its too easy, too ubiquitous, and too
dependable. You can't even use a social networking
product without an email for notifications.
Rather than getting users to choose between
collaboration tools and email, vendors need to do
a better job of merging or seamlessly blending
them together. Life gets simpler when a user can
make his message available to multiple blogs, to
interested groups, and to specific parites all at
once without having to choose which tool to use.
If users can send and receive a variety of
messages to and from business and extended
networks, they won't have to incur a "gear
switching" penalty to create shared messages that
begin to bring business value. Once they start
living in E2 tools, the value starts to come for
the whole enterprise.
