I agree with the article: there's about 40 years of Information Retrieval research underlying these new features. To be fair, Microsoft has sponsored a lot of the solidest research recently, people like Susan Dumais contribute a lot to the field.

If we're lucky, at least one of the new search tools will be both useful and usable!
