- Wasn't the idea for the 13" MacBook (Pro) going to replace this?
-
Here Apple seemed to be heading to killing the plastic MacBook.
Originally the 13" UniBody MacBook was just "MacBook" then later they
added a "Pro" to the name (which made sense, as it was so like the
existing MacBook Pros apart from it's size).
So it seems the MacBook is a weird hangover from what has gone
before. Everyone always want Apple to make low-end systems, and
mostly Apple refuse. Oddly I think this is a good thing. Now I'm not
saying that when I'm in the market for a new Mac I don't want to save
some money - of course I do! But when I get the Mac hone after
buying it, well I can tell where the money went. Now, I'm a geek, I
know a lot of people see buying a computer as an expense and
nothing more. I however get more pleasure from buying a new
computer than pretty much anything else I buy - Yes I'm sure many
reading this will find that weird. When Apple do tempt (force) me into
spending more on a machine that I really wanted to, I don't feel
stiffed, it seems like money well spent. I also don't replace my Mac all
that often (I also use PCs and they have more frequent refreshes -
often new systems or large expensive upgrades) and when I think
about how long I've had my Mac and what I paid for it, it really feels
like money well spent. I don't suppose it hurts that as I work in IT all
the money I make comes from the machines I've bought.
So what do I want from the next MacBook? Well probably something
with a reasonable processor (no Atoms please) a reasonable display
resolution (Mac OS X wasn't designed for really small screens) that's
light. I'd probably live without the optical drive, or the built-in
camera. You could make it smaller (but not so small I can't type) and
lose the light up Apple logo. I want to be able to take the RAM to at
least 4Gb (though 8Gb is better) and I could live with one of those new
batteries that can't be removed. Less creaky case, thinner if possible.
Oh and matt black in colour, the white looks great on the day you buy
it... not so much after that. - Posted by: jeremychappell Posted on: 08/26/09 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
