$299 laptop specials keep back-to-school shoppers happy; would you buy over a Netbook?

This will only drive down the cost of netbooks

So laptops drop to $299, netbooks will drop to $199. Or less.

This is really a bad news trend for MS. As hardware prices drop, Windows becomes a higher percentage of the unit cost. When it comes to price competition, Linux will win.

MSFT has already tried to respond by defining the screen size and machine specs. That's going to end in failure. If they try to run the netbook market, MS will get hammered.

Despite the claims, Windows 7 does not run well on netbook hardware and they can't offer XP forever. Windows mobile is the laughing stock of the industry. MSFT has nothing to compete in the netbook market segment.

The price pressure is only going to continue. Instead of $800 laptops, expect to start seeing more people using $299 netbooks. And next year $199 netbooks.
