Is Windows 7 really too expensive?

How can you call it "too expensive" if we don't have the prices yet?

Seriously... One Dell exec spouts off and everybody starts jumping to conclusions. I suppose that's one way of getting your daily exercise but really... I haven't seen any official price list for Windows 7 yet and it's quite premature to assume the worst.

The only thing we've heard thus far on pricing is that Microsoft plans on pricing Windows 7 "aggressively" - whatever that means. I seriously doubt they're going higher. Granted, Windows 7 IS a better OS than Vista in many ways, BUT...

1.) Yes, we're in a recession. The economy is not doing well. People won't be wanting to spend scads of money if they don't need to.

2.) They really want people to upgrade from XP and Vista. A reasonable price would encourage that and...

3.) ... a lower price would increase the volume of sales. While they might not make quite as much per copy, by selling more copies they would more than make up for the deficit.

I think Microsoft realizes the situation quite well and isn't going to make any seriously brain dead moves at this point.
