I'll stick with Asus.
Some big box stores sell the G50Vt-X1 (and G50Vt-X5) models for under $1000. Awesome performance specs and feel solid; which can't always be said for similarly priced models or even one or two higher priced units.

Sorry to name-drop, and I know Nokia makes great quality cell phones, but it will take a lot for me to drop existing brand loyalty -- only if Asus screws up big, and even then I won't be upgrading until 2011 or so. But Asus has made PC equipment for several years and has a sturdy reputation too.
