"We don't pay you to think."
As an ex-employee (computer technician from the pilot store), this was told to me verbatim several times. To me it sounded curious because if anyone should be thinking, it should be the guy repairing the computers, right?

If you had any original thought (constructive or otherwise) you were called a "Negative Opinion Leader" and from there on out you were seen as someone to hassle.

There was a contest at one point to rename the PC services (at that time called IQ Crew). They offered prizes to the employee who had the best name. People submitted a bunch of ideas. Then the name was announced. Firedog was it. "You picked it!" management proclaimed to us. Later, I looked it up and the name was purchased from an existing company. Still, they insisted it was a "grassroots" thing.

Also of note is that for the launch party for Firedog, they literally drenched a GeekSquad shirt in gasoline and lit it in fire in the parking lot.

And there's about a million other things wrong, like Planograms (they changed about one time a month and never grouped products logically, but we still had to take everything down and rearrange it every time), and the ever-delayed new POS system, and the Credit Champion position...

In short... Let it die. Let it be a message to companies that something as callous as firing your 3,400 best employees because they made too much money is something that is not acceptable or even profitable in the long run. Circuit City has been given ample opportunities to change, but they've stuck to half-heartedly emulating Best Buy, throwing in some Wal-Mart style labor decisions.

... Let it die.
