There's no reason why there wont' be a market for basic, simple, inexpensive appliances like the one you describe that are augmented by the high-tech information age.
TCP/IP when plumbed into the home in a 'utilitarian way' will become commonplace. A house without power outlets? Useless. A house without RJ-45? Pretty much the same.
